Pershing County’s Israel Knight sizes up his Battle Mountain opponent, Wyatt Madalena, in the 150 -pound first-place match at PCHS last Saturday.
The Pershing County High School wrestling team hosted the Northern 2A Regional Tournament this past Saturday.
The Mustangs placed second out of eight teams, with Battle Mountain winning with 235 points.
Pershing County placed second with 219.5 points and Eureka (108), Yerington (96), Wells (95.5), Coral Academy (69), Incline (42.5) and Owyhee (11) rounded out the team standings.
Each team sent between one (Owyhee) and 16 wrestlers (Pershing County) for a total of 71 athletes.
The spirit squad, coached by Christina Dickerman, cheered from the sidelines. Events on the red and black mats ran smoothly thanks to many volunteers.
"Overall, we had a great day. Five regional champions is awesome. We dropped a few critical matches and they didn’t allow us to chase down Battle Mountain in the team race but overall, it was a success," said coach Mike Brooks.
Pershing County’s Anthony Gibson competes in the 175-pound first-place match against Dante Sceirine of Yerington.
Pershing County’s five regional champions are Jeffrey Elerick at 144 pounds, Israel Knight (150), Angelo Gibson (157), Anthony Gibson (175) and Jake Trowbridge (190).
James George (120), Cade Liebsack (157) and Logan Hunt (215) placed second. Ayden Anderson (106), Landen Burt (113), Jaxson Happy (126) and Wyatt Hughes (165) came in third.
Fourth-place finishers were Braxson Bird (150) and Houston Allen (215). Rylie Burt (132) and Justin Carruth (138) came in fifth.
Magdalena Ramirez qualified at the NIAA All Girls Northern Regional at McQueen High School on January 24 -25.
She will be the first-ever Pershing County girl to compete at the state level. The sophomore trailblazer finished third place for the 140s in all of northern Nevada.
She and the 14 wrestlers who finished in fourth place or better at PCHS will compete in the state tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Rafter 3C Arena in Fallon.
