WINNEMUCCA — Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) proudly announces Norman Maga as the first graduate of its newly established Pulmonary Rehabilitation program.
Norman, a long-term pulmonary patient and participant in HGH’s Cardiac Rehab program, seized the opportunity to join Pulmonary Rehab when it launched, eager to improve his breathing and mobility.
The program, led by Respiratory Director Clarissa Vincent, was designed to assist individuals with chronic respiratory conditions by providing structured education and exercise routines. When Clarissa discussed the new program with Norman, he was excited to participate, seeing it as a valuable opportunity to enhance his quality of life.
Norman faced significant challenges upon entering the program, particularly due to his pre-existing health condition, which made breathing difficult and walking a struggle.
However, through the education and exercises provided by the Pulmonary Rehab team, Norman has made incredible progress. One of his most notable achievements is regaining the ability to grocery shop using a cart, a major milestone after previously relying on a scooter.
“I couldn’t breathe well before—I couldn’t even walk around the house without needing my 5 liters of oxygen. But now, I am breathing much better,” said Norman. “I appreciate all the tips and education. I plan on continuing to follow everything I learned and keep up with my steps.”
Throughout the program, Norman attended sessions twice a week, gradually increasing his endurance. Initially, working up to 1,000 steps, but he has now doubled that to 2,000. Even on cold days, he remains dedicated, ensuring he reaches his step goal by walking inside his
home to avoid the outside chill. Additionally, Norman now enjoys taking his five dogs for walks — something he previously couldn’t do.
Reflecting on his experience, Norman enthusiastically recommends the Pulmonary Rehab program to others. “If you have difficulty breathing, you better get to it! If you feel like you’re going downhill, this can really help. This program was so much more than I expected, and I am grateful to Clarissa and her team. I’ve already told a couple of guys about it who could benefit and will keep spreading the word.”
Norman’s journey is a testament to the impact of the Pulmonary Rehab program at HGH.
His success story highlights the importance of structured rehabilitation close to home for pulmonary patients and serves as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
