Churchill County girls pulls away for double-digit win over Lowry

It was fitting that its was Hall of Fame night on Friday in Winnemucca, as the Lowry High School girls basketball team and Churchill County turned back the clocks.

In what resembled a Marvin Hagler versus Tommy Hearns heavyweight boxing match from the 1980s, as both teams traded jabs and uppercuts  throughout the night.

It was the Greenwave that provided the knockout punch in the fourth quarter to win 47-36 and split the season-series with the Lady Bucks.

A pair of baskets, including a 3-pointer from Karlie Simper and a bucket from Amillya helped Churchill County score the first nine points of the night.

However, the Greenwave would go without a field goal for the next 10 minutes of game time.

The Lady Bucks threw the next punch with the next 17 points, including the final 12 of the opening quarter. 

Natalya Guizar had an old-fashioned 3-point play and Britain Backus added five points in that run.

A 3-pointer by Natalee Formby and four free throws from Backus capped off the 17-0 run. Bishop stopped the run with 2:46 left in the first half with a pair of free throws and Lowry led 20-17 at halftime.

After scoring the final five points of the first half, Churchill County came back with another punch that led to 10 straight points and a 32-20 advantage out of halftime.

Raegan Johnson had eight points in the third quarter and Vernita Filmore and Bishop each knocked down 3-pointers to give the Greenwave a 35-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Churchill County increased the lead to double figures at the start of the fourth quarter when Lowry closed the gap to 40-35 with 3:21 to play after baskets by Backus and Matti DeLong.

That was as close as Lowry got, with Churchill County pulling away late to hold on for the victory.

Backus and DeLong paced the Lady Bucks with 16 and seven points, respectfully. Formby and Guizar each scored five, Khlloe Shorey two and Maura Braatz one.

Seven different players scored for Churchill County, with Johnson leading the way with 11. 

Bishop added nine points and Karlie Simper, Kortnie Simper and Fillmore scoring eight apiece. Kylee Simper and Janessa Bettencourt finished with two points each.

Churchill County remained atop the Northern 3A East standings at 7-1 and 18-6 overall. The Greenwave are tied with Fernley, also 7-1 but own the tiebreaker over the Vaqueros. 

Lowry is third in the league at 6-2 and 13-6 overall.

Churchill County travels to Dayton on Wednesday and Fernley on Friday. Lowry closes the regular season Wednesday at Fernley and Dayton on Friday.
