Battle Mountain continues Northern 2A dominance with another regional title

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team won the Northern 2A Regional Championship this past Saturday in Lovelock.

After seeing the Northern 2A dual championship go to Pershing County High School the week before, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team bounced back win the Northern 2A Regional Championship this past Saturday in Lovelock and the Mustangs’ home floor.

The Longhorns defeated the Mustangs 235-219.50, with Eureka (108), Yerington (96) and Wells (95.5) completing the top five.

Battle Mountain brought home five individual crowns including Donovan Gilbert at 106 pounds, Finn Bundrock (113), Kaycen Stewart (120), Logan Brizzee (165), Chris Ornelas (215) and Leo Mathias (285).

Gilbert wrestled just twice at 106 pounds, opening with a 17-2 win over Eureka’s Lian Allred and finishing with a pin over Wells’ Cade Sampson.

Finn Bundrock and Stewart each had three matches, with Bundrock advancing to the final with an 18-1 decision over Wells’ Jayden Kiser.

The freshman pinned Anastasia Curiiti of Coral Academy of Reno in the second period for the win.

Stewart, also a freshman, won his first two bouts by fall at 120 pounds and he closed out the day with a 9-5 decision over Pershing County’s James George.

Brizzee’s toughest match was his quarterfinal opener, where the senior escaped with an 8-5 win over Incline’s Aidan Midgley. 

Brizzee followed with a 12-4 victory over Pershing County’s Wyatt Hughes and he need just 81 seconds to pin Devin Salsby of Coral Academy for the title.

Ornelas received a first-round bye at 215 pounds and knocked off a pair of Pershing County wrestlers by pin, including Logan Hunt in the championship.

Mathias had to wait all day for his one match, as he pinned Eureka’s Mason Williams at the end of the first period.

Anthony Lopez-Hernandez placed second at 132 pounds, defeating Wells’ Maximillion Dahl 14-7 in the semifinals.

Wyatt Madalena was second as well at 150 pounds, winning by fall in his first two bouts.

The junior lost a heartbreaker in the final, losing 8-7 to Pershing County’s Israel Knight. 

Knight led 3-2 after two periods but extended the advantage to 7-2 with an escape and takedown at the beginning of the third period.

Madalena scored himself an escape six seconds after Knight’s takedown and a penalty point after Knight’s second stall call.

Madalena tied the match at 7-7 with 36 seconds left, when Knight scored an escape to get the win.

Aden Jenkins finished third at 157 pounds and Elijah Ceja (126) and James Spealman (144) each finished fourth.

In the Southern 2A, White Pine won the team title by 60 points over Pahranagat Valley and have five individual champions headed into the NIAA State Championships at the Rafter 3C Arena in Fallon.

Wrestling starts at noon on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
