With just one meet left in the regular season, the Lowry High School girls track and field team is priming itself for a possible long run into the postseason.

The Buckaroo ladies were in Reno this past Saturday at McQueen High School for the Northwest Invite and placed fifth with 50.16 points.

Reno won the team title with 90.22 points, followed by Spanish Springs (69.33), Galena (69) and McQueen (68.66).

A week after setting the school record in the mile, sophomore Ayla Thomas placed second in the 800 meters in a time of 2 minutes, 24.64 seconds, the 20th best time in the state regardless of classification. 

Junior Kianna Bazile picked up a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 35 feet, 5.50 inches, which is ranked 13th in the state. 

She clocked in a personal best in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.88 seconds and had a mark of 4-11 in the high jump to place fourth.

Teammates Vanessa Lott and Amya Betes each cleared 4-7 to tie for seventh and Lott added a 12th-place finish of 15 feet in the long jump.

Britain Backus (13.12), Tarina Weatherspoon (13.13) and Kaitlin Messmer (13.24) were seventh, eighth and 10th in the 100-meter dash. Kepa Hilbish placed eighth in the 200 meters in a time of 27.29 and Messmer (27.63) was 12th.

Sophomore Ava Swensen finished sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.29 and senior Mia Preciado was 10th in the 3,000 meters at 12:57.31.

The 4x400 relay of Bazile, Lott, Swensen and Thomas finished second in a time of 4:22.43, which is the 22nd fastest time in the state. Reno won the race at 4:17.01 and the nearest 3A team was eight seconds behind Lowry.

The 4x800 relay of Ava Swensen, Preciado, Brookyln Swensen and Thomas were fifth in a time of 10:22.84. Spring Creek was sixth, 31 seconds behind Lowry. Galena won the race at 10:00.68, the third fastest time in the state.

The 4x100 relay had the first six teams separated by just. 92 seconds. 

Lowry’s Weatherspoon, Messmer, Hilbish and Backus were fifth in a time of 50.74. Spanish Springs won the race at 49.83.


Kenison wins triple jump for Lowry boys

In the boys division, junior Brent Kenison won the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 5 inches and was the runner-up in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-5. Kenison placed sixth in the long jump at 20-1 and was seventh in the pole vault at 12-6.

Jonathan Moser placed 11th in the discus with a toss of 127-11 and was 21st in the shot put. Sophomore Cooper Hogland placed 19th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:37.37.

Lowry closes out the regular season with a trip to Carson City on Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Northern 3A Trials take place at Douglas High School and the regional finals will be May 9-10, also at Douglas.
