After opening the season at home in mid-August, the Lowry High School football team have been road warriors ever since.

With a bye week thrown in, the Buckaroos completed a three-game road trip at Spring Creek on Friday night. 

The two rivals provided fireworks and the scoreboard operator busy with a combined 88 points.

Spring Creek rallied from a 28-14 deficit to win 54-34 for its first victory of the season. Lowry dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Northern 3A.

The Spartans grabbed a 14-7 advantage after a quarter of play, when the Buckaroos put up 21 straight points in the second quarter.

Three minutes into the second quarter, Lowry tied the game on a 30-yard pas from Erick Valencia. 

With about four minutes left in the first half, the Buckaroos grabbed a 21-14 lead on a rushing touchdown.

Lowry was back in business seconds later after recoverin an onside kick. Just a few plays later, Valencia connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to push the advantage to 28-14.

The frantic last four minutes of the first half provided the third touchdown in four minutes, as Spring Creek scored from the air and added a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to 28-22 at halftime.

The Spartans turned the tables and all the momentum to their side, not allowing the Buckaroos to run an offensive play until five minutes left in the third quarter.

Spring Creek scored on the opening drive of the third quarter and added the 2-point conversion for a 30-28 lead. 

The Spartans recovered an onside kick of their own and quickly turned into a 3-yard touchdown run for a 36-28 lead after the missed 2-point conversion.

Late in the third quarter, Lowry turned the ball over on downs on its only possession of the period and a minute into the fourth quarter, Spring Creek was back in the end zone and led 42-28.

The Buckaroos finally stopped the Spartan momentum with a third touchdown pass from Valencia with eight minutes left to play to cut the Spring Creek lead to 42-34.

That was a s close as Lowry got, as Spring Creek intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter and turned the miscues into touchdowns for the 54-34 victory.

Lowry’s game with Elko has been moved to Saturday at 1 p.m. 

A lack of officials forced the move.
