Pershing County soccer blanks Battle Mountain

The Elko/Pershing County girls soccer game got rained out last Tuesday because of thunder and lightning in Elko.

However, the Mustangs stormed Battle Mountain on Saturday. Lovelock beat their rival school 12-0.

"We were excited to play them because we did not get to play them last year," coach Kelly Brooks said.

Pershing County now stands at 4-5-2, overall, and 3-5-2 in the Northern 3A East.

Midfielders Yasmin and Nayeli Acosta each scored three goals against Battle Mountain.

Yasmin is one of Lovelock's five seniors, along with goalie Lily Burt, Kim Hinds, Grace Kalsem and Kim Trowbridge. Her sister Nayeli is a sophomore.

Riley Harvey, Elizabeth Nava and Trowbridge each executed two goals against the Longhorns, bringing the Mustangs to a total of 20 goals this season.

Last year, at this time, they had only seven.

"This season, we have been focusing on possessing the ball. The girls are working on moving off the ball to create situations where they can receive a pass so their teammate isn't forced just to kick it out of pressure," Brooks said.

On Friday, at 1:30 p.m., the Mustangs play their homecoming game against White Pine (2-7). It will be the second meeting of the year between the Mustangs and Bobcats.

On Sept. 6, the Mustangs prevailed with a score of 2-0.
