Last Thursday night, the Pershing County football team returned from an extended bye and routed Silver Stage 58-0 on Joe Yanni Field.
The week before, smoke from the Davis fires scrapped the Incline/Pershing game for a while.
“We didn’t anticipate an extra bye week so it was awesome to get back out there. It was great to see limited rust. Our offensive line blocked well, and the backs blocked the perimeter, leading to long touchdown plays,” coach Mike Brooks said.
The Mustangs, unfazed by their unexpectedly long break, played a fast and aggressive game out of the gate.
They had three defensive touchdowns in the first half, when the Nighthawks called it a night.
Senior QB Travis Donaldson had a defensive, rushing and two passing touchdowns in the first quarter. He and Trenton Rhodes also scored off interceptions.
Junior running back Ashton Jimenez scored the first touchdown of his high school career, a memory he will savor. It came on the defensive side of the ball.
Taylor Montes continued building on his receiving campaign with his third receiving touchdown of the year.
So far, it’s been a banner season for Pershing County, with the conference win against Silver Stage, they now stand at 4-0, overall, and 2-0 in the Northern 2A.
After the dramatic team effort, KOLO 8 featured the Mustangs and named Donaldson the Player of the Week.
It was the Nighthawk’s second game of the year after their 45-0 loss against Battle Mountain on Sept. 6. They now go on the road against CASR.
The Mustangs look forward to their Homecoming Game against Yerington (2-0) this Friday at 7 p.m.
