Coming off three straight road wins over Northern 3A West opponents, the Lowry High School volleyball team returned to its home floor this past weekend to begin Northern 3A East play against Spring Creek and Elko.

The Lady Bucks came up short in both matches, losing 33-31, 25-9, 25-23 to the Spartans on Friday night at 25-23, 25-8, 25-19 to the Indians on Saturday afternoon to fall to 0-2 in league play.

Against Spring Creek, Lowry looked to be in full control of the first set, scoring nine of the first 12 points, aided by a tip from Allison Green and a kill by Kyra Schiermeister.

A block and kill by Olivia Espinola and a tip by Makenna Garcia kept Lowry’s advantage at 15-10.

That lead grew to 20-12 after a missed served by Spring Creek, two kills from Vanessa Lott and a kill by Espinola. The Spartans called timeout after that to stop the momentum and it worked.

Spring Creek went on a 10-2 run, tying the set at 22 on an ace, as Lowry could not stop the rally. Lowry ended the spurt with a kill from Lott but Spring Creek scored the next two points to go in front 24-23.

After going back-and-fort, the Lady Bucks led 26-25 after a hitting error by the Spartans but could not finish and also has set point at 27-26 and 28-27 after a kill by Schiermeister.

The Spartans came back with five of the next six points to go in front, when the Lady Bucks battled back to lead13-9 after a kill by Karyn Morton and a kill and block by Kianna Bazile.

Lowry led 23-18 late in the set but after a timeout, Spring Creek scored the final seven points to win the match.

On Saturday, Lowry gave league-leading Elko everything they could handle in the opening set.

Three straight aces from Lott, cut the Indian lead to 12-11 and a block by Bazile tied the set at 13.

A tip and two kills by Espinola helped keep the set tied at 21 but Elko scored the final two points of the set.

The Indians raced out to a 16-3 lead in the second set and cruised to the win and pulled away in the third set after being tied 12-12.

Lowry hosts Churchill County on Friday at 6 p.m. as part of homecoming.
