BMHS cross country team runs in Fernley, Elko


The Battle Mountain High School cross country team made the short trip to Elko this past Friday for the Run the Rubies Cross Country Invitational at the Powerhouse Picnic Area.

Juniors Danielle Madalena and Sonja Sherve earned top-10 finishes for Battle Mountain.

Madalena placed eighth in a time of 20:55.95 in the 3.1-mile race and Sherve was one spot behind her at 21:08.70.

Fello junior Ivy Peterson finished 17th in a time of 23:17.04 and Violet Peterson was 27th in a time of 26:46.04.

Elko and North Valleys each had three runners finish in the top six. Elko’s Lilianna Haynes won the race in a time of 17:58.13.

Elko took home the team title with 30 points and North Valleys (47) was second.

On the boys side, junior Sean Doney paced the Longhorns with a 24th-place finish in a time of 19 minutes, 6.22 seconds in the 3.1-mile race. Senior Gabriel Aleman was 52nd at 27:16.12.

Wooster had two of the top three finishers, including the winner in sophomore Carson Boyer in a time of 15:30.43. Atticus Reyher (15:42.31) placed third. Elko’s Octaviann Cordova was the runner-up at 15:39.29.

Wooster won the team title with 31 points, followed by host Elko at 52. North Valleys (84), Churchill County (85) and West Wendover (146) rounded out the team standings.  


Madalena wins Roadhill Invitational in Fernley

Madalena won the Roadhill Invitational held in Fernley on Thursday, Sept. 12, with a time of 25:27 on the 3.1-mile course. 

Sherve placed third in a time of 26:33 and Ivy Peterson (30:41) placed 10th.

Dayton won the team title with 21 points, followed by Fernley (24) and Churchill County (33).

Doney was the only Battle Mountain boy to run the race and he finished 13th in a time of 23:18.

Battle Mountain travels to Reno on Tuesday, Oct. 1, for the The Ranch Invitational at Damonte Ranch High School and will be in Sparks on Friday, Oct. 4, for the Reed Invitational.
