Last week, the Pershing County High School soccer team tied the visiting Fernley Vaqueros and beat the Whittell Warriors on the road. The Mustangs now have a 3-5-1 record overall and a 2-5-1 league record.
Yasmin Acosta scored an early goal against Fernley, but the Vaqueros tied it up before the half. In the second half, Acosta assisted Lexie Portillo in scoring a tie-breaking goal for Lovelock.
The score stayed at 2-1 until the last 15 minutes of the game when Fernley tied it up again (2-2).
"Anika Happy had a great defensive game and Lily Anderson-Burt (goalie) had the game of her life," coach Kelly Brooks said.
Next, the Mustangs traveled to Zephyr Cove to play the Whittell Warriors. It was the Mustang's first night game on Whittell's field since 2019. Since then, the outdoor sports fields have been completely renovated.
"Not only was the weather perfect, but the field and surrounding area were beautiful," said Brooks. "Our girls were excited to play."
Elizabeth Nava, Yasmin Acosta and Alejandra Pineda each had a goal. Nayeli Acosta had two. Portillo scored three, a hat trick.
"We got to put Briley Bird in the goal for the first time and play lots of people in places they hadn't played before," Brooks said. The Mustangs pulled off the win (8-0).
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Mustangs play rival school Battle Mountain on the road. They'll host Lowry on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m.
