The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team came away with a split of two Northern 2A matches this past weekend at home and sit at 4-3 in league play.
“The matches were fought hard this weekend as we tried out a new rotation as we are nearing the down slide of our season,” said BMHS coach Julia Ramirez. “We are working at utilizing more hitters on the net.”
Battle Mountain swept Silver Stage 25-19, 25-17, 25-10. Senior Stevlana Martinez had a team-high five kills to go with a block. Addison Mattheus, Halie Edgar and Emilie Johnson each finished with four kills.
Martinez and Johnson had three aces apiece, as the Longhorns had eight as a team. Lindsey Bleak collected a team-high seven digs, Jazmin Johnson had six and Alexis Rangel, Martinez and Emilie Johnson each had three digs.
Alissa Heinz (11) and Jazmin Johnson (10) had the assists for the Longhorns.
On Saturday, Battle Mountain fought with Sierra Lutheran in a long five-set match. The teams traded sets, as the Falcons won the opener 25-17, while the Longhorns claimed the second set 25-23.
Sierra Lutheran took the important third set 26-24 and Battle Mountain stayed in the match, winning set four 25-22. The Falcons picked up the match victory, winning the fifth set 15-11.
Martinez led the way with eight kills and Noel Hill added six on the day. Thalia Gonzalez knocked down four kills and Asier Iturriaga and Emilie Johnson had three kills apiece.
Emilie Johnson added a team-high five aces, Martinez had four and Ella Moore and Jazmin Johnson had three aces apiece. Lindsey Bleak had four digs.
Battle Mountain travels to Lovelock on Friday to face league-leading Pershing County at 5 p.m. The road trip continues on Saturday in Reno against Coral Academy at noon.
