It was a nine-goal week for the Pershing County High School girls soccer team.

They lost two home games against Spring Creek 8-0 and Elko 10-0, but blanked White Pine (2-0) and West Wendover (7-0) on the road.

The week started on Thursday against the visiting Spring Creek Spartans.

"Spring Creek is always toward the top of our league. I was proud of our girls because they held Spring Creek scoreless for almost 30 minutes. After that, Spring Creek popped in a couple of quick goals, but the Mustangs continued to work on the skills we've been focusing on. They played hard the entire time," coach Kelly Brooks said.

On Saturday, Pershing County hosted Elko. The visitors started with a quick goal against the Mustangs.

"It took us a few minutes to gather ourselves and start playing our game. When we did, there was a solid 20 minutes when Elko didn't score," Brooks said.

Next, the Mustangs took their game on the road. Last year, White Pine beat Pershing County twice, but on Friday, the Mustangs played more competitively and brought home the win.

"This was a huge win for us. Anika Happy made so many defensive stops I couldn't even begin to count them. She had an outstanding game. Our defense (Kimi Trowbridge, Megan DeLaVega and Desaray Vidrio) was on their A-game as well.

Lily Anderson-Burt made some huge stops and played smart," Brooks said.

Pershing County scored their first goal against White Pine about 15 minutes into the second half when Yasmin Acosta put the ball in the back of the net from a corner kick.

Next, Riley Harvey passed to Lexie Portillo, who dribbled to the goal and scored.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, the Mustangs made the road trip to West Wendover.

In the first half, Nayeli Acosta scored a goal with an assist from Grace Kalsem.

Yasmin Acosta followed with an unassisted goal. Liz Nava scored following up a shot from Yasmin Acosta.

In the second half, Riley Harvey scored with an assist from Yasmin Acosta. Acosta went on to score two more goals, one unassisted and one assisted by Harvey.

It was her third goal of the game, a hat trick. Nayeli Acosta had the last goal of the day, unassisted.

"This game was a lot of fun because everyone got lots of playing time and we were able to change up our positioning," Brooks said.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Lovelock hosted Fernley. Results were not available at press time.

Next comes a string of road games against Whittell (Sept. 12), Elko (Sept. 17) and Battle Mountain (Sept. 21).
