Cassinelli wins medalist honors on home course, Lowry wins team title over Truckee

The last time the Lowry High School girls golf team qualified for the state tournament as a tea, was back in 2021, when the tournament was shortened to 27 holes.

If the first two Northern 3A tournaments are any indication, it looks like the Buckaroos will be playing at the state tournament at Dayton Valley Country Club in early October.

With a full squad assembled this fall, Lowry won its home tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 4, with a team score of 384. 

Truckee was a close second at 396 and Spring Creek (451), Elko (452), Churchill County (452) rounded out the top five.

South Tahoe at 455, Fernley (480), North Valleys (486) and Dayton (645) completed the scores.

Katie Cassinelli, who finished eighth at the 2023 state tournament, was the low medalist, with an impressive round of 5-overr 77. 

Truckee freshman Allison Mortimeyer was second at 79 and teammate Alina Gillespie (85) placed third.

After spending a year in Spring Creek, Presley Hayes is back with the Buckaroos and carded a round of 98. Jordyn Medicine-Cloud at 104 and Kailani Rodriguez (105) had the final kept scores for Lowry. 

Lainey Novacek shot 106 and Baylie Miller finished with a 127.


Lowry finishes second at Fernley

Ther Northern 3A season got underway on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Fernley Golf Course. 

Truckee grabbed the team championship at 375, followed by Lowry at 387. Churchill County (438), Elko (461) and South Tahoe (462) rounded out the top five.

Mortimeyer led the way individually, shooting 75, with Cassinelli second at 82 and Gillespie (83) was third.

Medicine-Cloud carded a 99 for Lowry, followed by Novacek (102), Hayes (104), Rodriguez (109) and Miller (134).

The Northern 3A doesn’t contest a regional championship and the top three spots in the final regular season points standings qualify for state.

Lowry and Truckee lead with 13 points and Churchill County sits in third with 9.5 points.

The Northern 3A was off this week and head to eastern Nevada and to Spring Creek on Monday and Elko on Tuesday.
