The home opener for the Battle Mountain High School football team was all but over before it got started.

The Longhorns posted their second consecutive shutout, blanking Silver Stage 45-0 on Friday night at Tim Knight Field. Battle Mountain moved to 1-0 in the Northern 2A and 2-1 overall.

Battle Mountain scored four touchdowns in the first 11 minutes of the game, as Silver Stage turned the ball over on downs, as well as interceptions during the night. 

The Longhorns picked off five passes on the night.

Silver Stage handed Battle Mountain excellent field position, failing on fourth down on its opening drive. 

The Longhorns quickly drove 39 yards, scoring on a 5-yard run by Ari Kyllonen for a 6-0 lead.

The Nighthawks gave the ball right back on downs and this time the Longhorns needed to move just 22 yards and led 12-0 with 7:05 left in the opening quarter after a touchdown run by Jake Perrone.

Isaac Martinez intercepted Blayne Baratti on the next Silver Stage drive and one play later, Perrone was back in the end zone after a 9-yard run, leading to a 19-0 advantage.

Baratti was picked off once again on the next Nighthawk drive and James Spealman capped off the first quarter scoring with an 8-yard run to make the score 26-0. Battle Mountain started all four of its first-quarter drives in Silver Stage territory.

It went from bad to worse for the Nighthawks, as the Longhorns’ Colton Mills intercepted him early in the second quarter.

Despite penalty after penalty, Battle Mountain added to its advantage, as Liam Bundrock scored on a 9-yard run. The final blow of the first half occurred when Chase Lutz intercepted Baratti and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown and a 39-0 lead at halftime.

The entire second half was played with a running clock, as Battle Mountain increased its lead to 45-0, six minutes into the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Wyatt Madalena.

The Battle Mountain defense held Silver Stage to 100 yards of total offense, with 77 of those coming through the air. The Nighthawks had 13 carries for 23 yards.

Battle Mountain hosts Dayton on Friday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game. Battle Mountain is back home to host North Tahoe on Thursday, Sept. 19. The game was set to be played in Tahoe City, but the Lakers’ football field is not ready after summer construction.
