On Sept. 4, Humboldt General Hospital EMS-Rescue conducted a critical school bus extrication training, emphasizing the importance of preparation and teamwork in emergency response.
Led by instructor Ken Whittaker, the training provided EMS personnel with hands-on experience using specialized tools in complex scenarios, such as a bus accident.
This valuable training was made possible by a generous bus donation from the Humboldt County School District, for which we extend our special thanks to Ken Whittaker for securing the donation.
“Our goal was to offer our EMS team the opportunity to build confidence and develop a strong sense of teamwork,” said Ken Whittaker. “By allowing our crews to experiment with the tools, they learned what works and what doesn’t, which is crucial in real-life situations where quick thinking and adaptability are key.”
Humboldt General Hospital EMS is proud to be an All-Risk department, responsible for a wide range of services beyond medical care.
These include vehicle accident extrication, off-road rescues, hazardous material incidents, and search and rescue operations in coordination with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
The team is also trained in rope rescue and the Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) to ensure highway safety during incidents.
In many communities, these services are provided by separate specialized teams, but here in Humboldt County, HGH EMS offers a comprehensive, multifaceted system of care that is unmatched.
“While we hope never to have to use the skills we practiced during this training, we are grateful to have this knowledge and experience so we can be there when our community needs us most,” added Andrew Loveless, EMS Chief.
