(ELKO, NEV.) Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital (NNRH) has committed to funding $5,000 in scholarships for students pursuing an Associate of Science in Radiologic Sciences through the Great Basin College Radiology Program. NNRH Radiology Scholarships will be awarded to five students per year.
“Radiology, or diagnostic imaging, plays a vital role in healthcare,” said Steve Simpson, hospital CEO. “At NNRH, we know just how crucial it is to have highly skilled imaging technologists on staff to meet our patients’ needs. That’s why we’re proud to support the radiology workforce of tomorrow with these scholarships.”
The Great Basin College Radiology Program is a two-year program, consisting of five semesters of clinical and course work. The program recently received the highest award of an eight-year accreditation cycle from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiology Technology. During the first two semesters of the program, students attend courses two days per week at either the Elko or Pahrump campuses. For the following three semesters, students complete online didactic coursework and clinical rotations throughout Nevada. Upon completion of the program, students apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist credentialing examination.
“As the caliber of imaging technology continues to rise, so does the demand for radiologic technologists,” said Alex Kiehn, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at NNRH. “We recently upgraded to a brand new, 128-slice CT scanner here at the hospital. We’re hopeful some of the students currently attending GBC will come work with this state-of-the-art system. At the end of the day, it’s all about providing the highest level of care possible to our patients.”
The GBC Radiology Program has demonstrated a 100% employment rate, a 90% three-year average credentialing pass rate and has been the primary source for the imaging workforce in Northern Nevada for the past decade.
“We are deeply appreciative of our long-standing partnership with Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital and are committed to collaborating closely to shape a robust future for Nevada’s radiology workforce," stated Great Basin College Interim President Dr. Amber Donnelli.
