It was the last "first home volleyball game of the year" for Pershing seniors Raegan Burrows and Aaliyah Allen.
They and their teammates hosted the Silver Stage Nighthawks last Wednesday, beating them in three sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-14).
Allen gave the Mustangs added power on the right side of the net, providing Pershing County's offense with options to react quickly. Allen added an ace and six kills. Burrows had two aces, 12 kills and 24 digs.
"Silver Stage was scrappy and had a huge block that stopped our outside hitters (Khloe Montes and Burrows) a couple of times. We had to adjust our set to get their blocker's timing off," coach Monica Halverson said.
Halverson named Montes "the player of the game," with eight aces, three kills and 13 digs.
Kenya Vaughan (2) plays the middle against Silver Stage with support from Mia Canchola (3).
Mia Canchola was the "star server" with seven digs. Canchola's fellow setter Jaymie George had three aces, 19 assists and four digs.
Meanwhile, Kyra Cerini and Kenya Vaughan handled the middle. Vaughan added a kill and a dig. Cerini had four aces, four kills and six digs.
Defensive specialist Emma Blondheim added what the coach called "a killer dig off a huge slide."
Utility player Laura Gomez added four digs. Libero Arya Garland had one kill and 23 digs.
Outside hitter Khloe Montes passes the ball to a teammate during a Northern 2A match against the Nighthawks.
"The girls had energy and are playing like a team should. I couldn't be more proud of them for taking direction and applying it while they play," said Halverson.
On Friday, Aug. 30, the Mustangs traveled to Reno to play Oasis Academy.
On Wednesday, Sept. 4, they played Coral Academy on the road. Results were not available at press time.
This Friday, Sept. 6, they play Sierra Lutheran on the road.
They're home again on Saturday, Sept. 7, to host the Incline Highlanders.
