For the first time in school history, the Battle Mountain High School girls cross country team has qualified for the NIAA 2A State Championships as a team.
The Longhorns finished third with 44 points at the Northern 2A Regional Championships this past Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park next to the University of Nevada.
North Tahoe, the winningest cross country team in state history, easily won the team title with 12 points and fellow Lake Tahoe member Incline (42) was second.
Coral Academy (51) and Wells (61) completed the team scores.
The junior duo of Danielle Madalena and Sonja Sherve paced the Battle Mountain girls.
Madalena placed eighth in a time of 23 minutes, 55 seconds and Sherve was one spot back at 24:45.
Sophomore Violet Peterson finished 11th, stopping the clock at 26:00 and Ivy Peterson crossed the line in 20th at 28:39.
North Tahoe had all four runners place in the top six, including the first three finishers.
Britta Johnson won the race in a time of 20:08 and Hailey Gordon (21:20) and Alexis Hallenberg (21:26) were second and third, respectively.
Isla Morrison (22:04) of Coral Academy and Incline’s Saige Noaln (22:30) rounded out the top five.
Doney, Aleman run for BMHS boys
Battle Mountain only had two boys run at the regional championships, with junior Sean Doney finishing 43rd with a time of 21:54. In his final race, Gabriel Aleman was 60th at 28:06.
Whittell’s Logan Robertson won the race in a time of 17:24 and North Tahoe freshman Elio Adriani (17:29) was second.
North Tahoe won the team title with 29 points, followed by Incline (52), Coral Academy (60), Wells (70) and Sierra Lutheran (93).
The Battle Mountain girls run at 1:20 p.m. on the 3.1-mile Veterans Memorial Park Course on Saturday.
