The Lowry High School girls cross country team will compete as a full squad at the state championships for the first time since 2009. Alyla Thomas finished fifth at the regional meet.

From 2000-09 there was no better girls cross country in Nevada than Lowry High School.

The Buckaroos won nine state championships in that span and was second on a tiebreaker in 2006 or Lowry would have won 10 consecutive titles.

The run as a full team ended in 2009 and state championship meets went dry until this fall.

For the first time since 2009, Lowry High School qualified its full team to the state championships.

The Buckaroos finished fourth with 96 points at the Northern 3A Regional Championships this past Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.

Truckee claimed the tea title with 51 points, followed by Elko (66) and Spring Creek 69.

All four teams will travel to Boulder City.

Lowry sophomore Alyla Thomas continued her impressive season finishing fifth in a time of 20 minutes, 33 seconds on the 3.1-mile course next to the University of Nevada.

Thomas won the Lowry Invitational the week before.

In a narrow finish at the line, South Tahoe’s Lyla Landy beat North Valleys’ Taylor Dickey by two seconds (19:39-19:41).

Elko freshman Avery Shotly placed third with a time of 20:01 and Truckee senior Sidney McIntosh (20:20) was fourth.

The Buckaroos showed its pack running ability, which helped move them on to the state meet.

Four Lowry runners were within six spots, with Mia Preciado (23:21) and freshman Azure Sagers (23:22) neck and neck in 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Mariah Ramos placed 26th in a time of 23:41, sophomore Natalia Cassinelli was 28th at 23:46, Brooklyn Swensen (24:41) and Adel Hall (26:09) rounded out the finishers for the Buckaroos.

Hoagland qualifies for state meet

In the boys 3.1-mile race, sophomore Cooper Hoagland finished 15th in a time of 18:04 to qualify for the state meet in Boulder City. Lowry did not have enough runners for a team score.

Freshman Anden Thomas finished 29th at 18:53 and Finn Baldwin hit the finish line at 21:28.

In his final race, senior Lennox Zebroski had a time of 22:31.

Truckee’s Kiefer Willcox ran away with the individual title in a time of 15:51, with Wooster’s Aticus Reyher (16:12) in second.

Truckee took home the team crown with 41 points and Spring Creek (69), Wooster (90) and South Tahoe (96) also qualified as teams next Saturday.

In addition, the Lowry boys were named the 2024 3A State Academic state champions.

The Lowry girls run at 12:10 p.m. on the 3.1-mile Veterans Memorial Park Course on Saturday. Hoagland races at 12:45 p.m.
