Six competitors competed in this year’s fourth annual 4-H “Growl-O-Ween” dog costume contest held Oct. 5, on Lovelock’s Main Street.
Contestants paraded their dog in front of the judges Sarah Renfroe and Mikayla Nelson and gave explanations of the dog’s costume and abilities as well as entertainment for all.
Youth winners were a Dachshund dog owned by 6-year-old Addison Paredes and a German Shorthair Pointer owned by 9-year-old Kinley Collins. Addison and her dog Stella were dressed as Tasty Treats. Addison’s costume was a hamburger and Stella the Dachshund or Wiener dog’s costume was a play on breed as she was dressed up as a hot dog- winning best costume and best behaved.

While law enforcement dog Patti a German Shorthair Pointer was dressed as a cop who was being led by the Halloween Robber and owner- Kinley Collins winning best trick and waggiest tail.
The adults came with a plethora of creative costumes. Best Trick and second in costume went to the 4-H Dog Leader Samira Dyer and her Cocker Spaniel Thor featuring the new movie Deadpools’s wise crack mercenary characters with costumes being dog pool and lady pool. While Brailen Allen dressed as a fisherwoman and her long hair Doxy dressed as an adorable goldfish reeled in the win of the best costume. Waggiest Tail went to Theodore a Labradoodle who was dressed as the ever-enthusiastic Sundance Kid and owned and shown by Cassidy Burke dressed as Butch Cassidy.
While Louise Gauvin’s Yorkie Maltese- Button dressed as a pumpkin and said to hop from pumpkin patch to pumpkin patch endeared the crowd winning best behaved.
Proceeds for entries went to the Pershing County 4-H Dog club for future events, prizes, and clinics. If interested in enrolling your youth in this 4-H club please call Colby at the Extension office at 775-273-2923 or email her colbyburke@unr.edu
The Pershing County 4-H Dog Club currently teaches and focuses on dog health care, safety, obedience, while providing service to community (animal shelter tasks), and fun with meetings and events that include the obstacle course and costume contests.
