Great Basin College (GBC) will host the Winnemucca Center Celebration of Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home on Oct. 25, from 3-6 p.m. The event, which coincides with Nevada Day, offers the community a chance to engage with Latino literature and participate in creative writing activities. It will take place at GBC’s Winnemucca Center, Room WHST 111, with an option to attend virtually.
Supported by a grant from the Library of America, the event will explore themes from The Library of America Anthology of Latino Poetry. The afternoon features a blend of academic discussion, hands-on workshops, and a poetry reading, with food and drinks provided by the Student Government Association.
The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with a panel discussion on Latino literature, featuring Dr. Guadalupe Escobar and Dr. Daniel Enrique Pérez from the University of Nevada-Reno, along with Dr. Tim Esh from GBC. At 4:15 p.m., participants can join a creative writing workshop led by Dr. Katie Karnehm-Esh from GBC and Kahlo Smith from UNR.
The event will conclude with a poetry reading at 5:15 p.m. by Nevada Poet Laureate Shaun Griffin, whose reflective and socially conscious work has long made an impact on the state’s literary scene. Refreshments will be served during the reading.
All members of the community are welcome, with students especially encouraged to participate in person or via Zoom. For virtual access, attendees can email Humanities Center Coordinator Dr. Katie Karnehm-Esh at katie.karnehmesh@gbcnv.edu.
