When you think of cross country the first thing that doesn’t come to mind is a frost delay.

The Lowry Invitational this year at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course was ran on a Saturday this year.

The only problem was that Mother Nature showed her mean side, with temperatures plummeting.

Lowry's Mia Preciado runs up the seventh hole during the Lowry Invitational on Saturday in Winnemucca.

After a 30-minute frost delay, the two 3-1. Mile races took place.

Lowry High School sophomore Alyla Thomas set a personal best at 20 minutes, 3 seconds to win the race.

The time would have likely been quicker, but Thomas and other leaders of the girls race took a wrong turn for a short time.

Bishop Manogue’s Samantha Tolotti finished second at 20:27. She finished 10th in the Northern 5A Regional Championship last year.

Elko’s Allyson Ortiz (20:45), Avery Shotly (20:47) and Lilliana Hayes (20:51) rounded out the top five.

Senior Mia Preciado placed ninth with a personal-best time of 22:13 and teammate Mariah Ramos was 11th at 22:41.

Brooklyn Swensen (23:12) placed 14th and freshman Azure Sagers (23:19) was one spot back. Both times were personal bests.

“The girls have come long ways,” said LHS coach Sergio Cabada. “Whatever you ask of them, they listen and do it. They have been working really hard. It’s amazing, a couple years ago we had just a couple girls in the entire program — now we have a chance to get to the state meet.”

Sophomore Cooper Hoagland paced the Lowry boys with a fifth-place finish in a time of 17:41, a personal best for him.
