Battle Mountain cross country runs at Lowry Invitational

Three members of the Battle Mountain High School cross country team made the short trip to Winnemucca on Saturday morning for the Lowry Invitational at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

The two races were pushed back about 30 minutes due to frost on the golf course after the cold night put temperatures in the 20s and 30s.

Danielle Madalena had the best finish for Battle Mountain in 21st with a time of 24:37.

Teammate Violet Peterson was one spot back in 22nd at 25:10 and Ivy Peterson placed 34th in a time of 27:57.

Lowry High School sophomore Alyla Thomas set a personal best at 20 minutes, 3 seconds to win the race.

The time would have likely been quicker, but Thomas and other leaders of the girls race took a wrong turn for a short time.

Bishop Manogue’s Samantha Tolotti finished second at 20:27.

She finished 10th in the Northern 5A Regional Championship last year.

Elko’s Allyson Ortiz (20:45), Avery Shotly (20:47) and Lilliana Hayes (20:51) rounded out the top five.

Elko had four of the top seven runners and won the team title with 34 points. Lowry was second at 42, followed by Damonte Ranch (71), Fernley (97) and Churchill County (104).

Battle Mountain did not have any boys race on Saturday.

Damonte Ranch saw three of the first four runners cross the finish line, led by Anthony Sharp at 16:11.

Ethan Faber (16:54) and Matthew Siegrist (17:08) were third and fourth, respectively.

Fernley’s Joe Perkins was the runner-up in a time of 16:49.

Damonte Ranch won the team title with 37 points and Elko (67) and Lowry (84) were second and third.

Battle Mountain travels to Reno and Rancho San Rafael Park on Friday for the Northern 3A Regional Championships.

The girls race at 10 a.m. and the boys at 12:35 p.m.

The top three teams from the North and the top three teams from the South advance to the eight-team Class 3A state championship meet.
