Lady Longhorn volleyball team collect two crucial wins on the road


After dropping five of its six previous matches, the Battle Mountain High School volleyball team collected two important Northern 2A victories on the road this past weekend.

Battle Mountain defeated Silver Stage on Friday 20-25, 25-18, 25-14. 25-17 and Sierra Lutheran 17-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-17 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Falcons won the first meeting this season in five sets, as the Lady Longhorns improved to 7-8 in the Northern 2A.

“We had a successful weekend of road games,” said BMHS coach Julia Ramirez. “We emphasized finishing plays and working to score points. We look forward to our last home games of the season this weekend.”

Battle Mountain collected 19 kills against Silver Stage, as Emilie Johnson had a team-high six, with Addison Matheus adding four. 

Thalia Gonazlez, Lindsey Bleak, Asier Iturriaga and Halle Edgard finished two kills each.

Serving was just as strong with 18 as a group, with Iturriaga at seven, Matheus with six and three each from Bleak and Johnson.

Alissa Heinz and Jazmin Johnson finished with eight and seven assists, respectively.

Bleak and Iturriaga reached double figures in digs with 11 and 10, respectively, and Andrea Alcaraz-Lopez had seven. Alexis Rangel added six digs and Johnson and Gonzalez each had five.

In the win over Sierra Lutheran, Gonzalez knocked down nine kills, while Johnson added six to go with two blocks. Matheus added six kills and Noel Hill and Iturriaga each had two.

Matheus posted a team-high six aces, with Bleak and Emilie Johnson finishing with two each. Jazmin Johnson and Heinz each had 12 assists and Bleak and Jazmin Johnson had 26 and 14 digs, respectively.

Battle Mountain plays its final two home matches of the season this weekend, playing Pershing County on Friday at 5 p.m. and Coral Academy on Saturday at noon.
