McDermitt drops home finale to league-leading Eureka

The McDermitt High School volleyball team closed out its home portion of the schedule on Saturday afternoon against Northern 1A East leader Eureka.

It was also senior day for the lone senior on the Bulldogs, Vina Tom, as she was honored during the match.

The Vandals did not play the gracious guest, sweeping the Bulldogs 25-11, 25-18 and 25-20, as McDermitt dropped to 6-4 in league play. McDermitt is in a battle for second-place in the league with Owyhee.

It is possible the Bulldogs and Braves could play in the first round of the regional tournament in Elko on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The opening set on Saturday was close at the start, as McDermitt trailed 13-9 after a kill by Tom. However, Eureka raced out to a 9-1 run to lead 22-10 when a kill by Niyla Willow ended the spurt.

Eureka held on to the momentum in the second set, racing out to a 14-4 advantage and forcing McDermitt to take a timeout. 

The Bulldogs turned the tables trailing 15-7, when Kiarra Crutcher took to the service line and drill three consecutive aces to cut the deficit to 15-10. A kill by Alexis Scott further trimmed the lead to 15-13.

However, the Vandals rallied back for six straight points to pull away and claim the win in the second set.

Once again, Eureka dominated the play in the early going of the third set, scoring 12 of the first 15 points.

Trailing 18-8 in the third set, McDermitt reeled off 10 straight points with Crutcher back at the service line. Eureka and put a stop to the run with a kill that was the first of four straight points to give Eureka a 22-18 advantage. 

McDermitt is off this week and concludes the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Carli and Saturday, Oct. 26, in Wells.

The Northern 1A East Regional Championship is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2, at Elko High School. The top five teams in the league advance to the tournament. 

The top seed receives a first-round bye. The winner of the No. 4-5 match will play the No. 1 seed. The No. 2-3 seeds play each other in the other semifinal.
