On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at approximately 5:18 p.m. Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) Troopers responded to a crash on Interstate 80 at mile marker 155 in Pershing County, approximately 20 miles west of Winnemucca.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a white Toyota Corolla was traveling east on Interstate 80 in the rightmost eastbound travel lane. A commercial motor vehicle (tractor and trailer) was traveling at a slow rate of speed in the rightmost eastbound travel lane due to a wildland fire that had closed Interstate 80 closer to Winnemucca. The front of the Corolla struck the trailer and remained in contact with the rear of the trailer after impact. Tragically, the driver of the Corolla succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver was identified as 65-year-old Lawerence Neely of East Carbon, Utah. There were no other occupants in the Corolla and the driver of the commercial motor vehicle did not sustain any injuries.
The crash is considered an open investigation and is being investigated by the Nevada Highway
