High school rodeo clubs stop in Elko


The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its latest stop in Elko on Oct. 5-6, with strong performances from local cowboys and cowgirls.

Humboldt County’s Matti DeLong was the runner-up in the barrel racing average, barely getting beat out by Spanish Springs’ Emily Bennett (29.634-29.779). DeLong was second in the first performance with a time of 14.687 seconds.

It was a rough weekend for the breakaway ropers, as DeLong placed 16th with a time of 13.140. She missed her calf in the second performance. 

DeLong added an eighth-place finish in girls cutting and was ninth in goat tying. 

She did not have a time in the first performance of goat tying but came back to place second in her final run at 8.020.

DeLong was fifth in the pole bending average on the strength of a runner-up finish in the second performance with a time of 21.959.

Humboldt County’s Brynn Barto won the first performance of barrel racing with a time of 14.169 but ran into trouble on day two as was seventh in the average.

Humboldt County’s Taylor Hill earned a sixth-place finish in the breakaway roping average with runs of 4.21 and 4.83. Hill placed 10th in both the girls cutting and goat tying average.

Humboldt County’s Natalie Mori scored 144 points in girls cutting to place fourth and was third in the second performance withy 72 points. 

Mori placed eighth in reined cow horse with 216.5 points and was third in the first performance with 143.5 points.

Humboldt County’s Leigh Johnson finished sixth in the pole bending average and 20th in barrel racing.

Kayleigh Marshall and partner Kylie Velasco of Wells were fourth in the team roping average and Battle Mountain’s Jorja Mashburn and Fallon’s Lauren Goings were ninth in team roping.

Battle Mountain’s Landry Meiman had two strong runs in goat tying to finish second in the average with a time of 16.750. Eureka’s Scarlett Buchanan won at 16.290.

Meiman placed second in the first performance of pole bending at 11.146 but knocked down a pole in her second run to place eighth in the average.

On the cowboy side, Humboldt County’s Lane Byrd placed fourth in boys cutting and Lovelock’s Jacob Burke was sixth with 135 points. Byrd and partner Shippy Tucker from Wells finished third in the team roping average. Burke placed 12th in tie-down roping.

Battle Mountain’s Eli Lancaster was the runner-up in steer wrestling with a time of 32.620. He won the first performance at 12.910. 

Lancaster and Andrew Morian from Douglas/Carson were third with a combined time of 21.330. Lancaster was eighth in tie-down roping.


Junior High Results

In the junior high division, Humboldt County’s Louise DeLong claimed the barrel racing average title in a time of 29.715. her time of 14.725 on day two was the quickest of the weekend.

Teammate Huntley Byrd was seventh in the average and bounced back after knocking over a barrel in the opening performance.

DeLong and Byrd were third and fourth in breakaway roping, with DeLong fifth in goat tying and Byrd ninth.  Byrd swept both performances of pole bending to take home the crown and DeLong was fourth.

DeLong and Elko’s Pete Mori placed second in ribbon roping and Byrd and Eureka’s Frank Buchanan were fifth. Byrd and Elko’s Luke Matson were third in team roping and DeLong and Case Morrison were seventh in team roping.

Battle Mountain’s Logan Lancaster and Elko’s Pete Mori won the team roping average and Battle Mountain’s Cray Tervort and Fallon’s Stella Lee were sixth.

Lancaster and Eureka’s Kaycee Osterhoudt were seventh in ribbon roping. Lancaster placed second in boys breakaway roping.

Humboldt County’s Jace Barto finished third in breakaway roping and fifth in goat tying. 

Teammate Chance Thomas won the chute dogging average and finished ninth goat tying.

The association heads to southern Nevada and Alamo on Oct. 25-27.
