Cassinelli and Hayes earn Northern 3A first-team, all-league golf honors


For the first time since the 2021 season, the Lowry High School girls golf team will be in the 3A NIAA State Championship as a team.

The Buckaroos finished second in the Northern 3A this fall to Truckee, with South Tahoe finishing third and advancing to state as well.

Lowry and the Northern 3A closed out the regular season last week in Lake Tahoe.

The first stop was Tahoe Donner Golf Course in Truckee on Monday, Oct. 7, and the Wolverines won on their home course with a score of 381. 

Lowry was second at 408, followed by South Tahoe (416), Churchill County (440) and Elko (443).

Truckee freshman Allison Mortimeyer, the Northern 3A Player of the Year, was the low medalist at 80. Teammate Alina Gillespie was second with a round of 82.

 Gillespie was named to the all-league first team.

Wooster’s Emily Whetzel was third at 87.

Katie Cassinelli and Presley Hayes paced Lowry with scores of 96 and 97. Both players earned all-league first team honors for their play this year.

Lainey Novacek, who was named to the all-league second team carded a 98. Bailey Miller (117) and Kailani Rodriguez (118) rounded out the Buckaroo scores.

The regular season concluded on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Lake Tahoe Golf Course and hosted by South Tahoe.

Truckee clinched the regional championship, winning the tournament with a 364. 

Lowry was second at 381 and South Tahoe (386) and Churchill County (437) were third and fourth, respectively. 

By finishing third, South Tahoe jumped over Churchill County for the final state tournament berth. South Tahoe finished with 29 points and Churchill County had 28.5.

Mortimeyer blew away the field with an impressive round of 69 to be the low medalist. Cassinelli was second overall with a round of 82 and Novacek and Hayes each shot 99. Jordyn Medicine Cloud shot a 101, followed by Rodriguez at 118 and Miller at 120.

The NIAA 3A State Championships began Tuesday at Dayton Valley Country Club and concluded on Wednesday.
