Wildfire evacuation plan drafted for Tahoe

A new wildfire evacuation plan has been drafted for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Lake Tahoe Regional Evacuation Plan is a collaborative effort between fire, law enforcement and emergency management officials spanning five counties across California and Nevada to address concerns of basin residents.

The ability to evacuate the Lake Tahoe Basin during a wildfire has been a topic of concern for many residents, particularly since the 2021 Caldor Fire forced the evacuation of South Lake Tahoe, California.

The topic became even more heated earlier this summer when an Incline Village resident commissioned an independent wildfire evacuation study using artificial intelligence that showed alarming evacuation times.

No local fire experts were consulted for the unofficial study, according to Tahoe officials.

Public comment is being sought through Nov. 20 on the new, official plan.
