Pershing freshman Desaray Vidrio (16) challenges Fallon for possession of the ball last Tuesday at PCHS.

Last Tuesday (Oct. 1), the Pershing County High School girls soccer hosted the undefeated Churchill County Greenwave (12-0) and lost 10-0.

The Mustangs rebounded against the Whittell Warriors on Thursday, winning 8-0.

“In spite of the goal differential against Churchill County, we actually played pretty well,” coach Kelly Brooks said. “But we had a few lapses where they popped two or three goals in at a time.”

According to the coach, the Mustangs pressured well, connected passes and played smart defense.

Junior forward Valerie Franco (5) drives the ball across the field.

The Mustangs got a lot of time on the field against Whittell to continue their focus on movement off the ball, connecting passes and looking for crosses.

Sophomore Milagros Gonzalez stood out.

“She just joined the team this year and had an outstanding game. It was fun for the team to watch how far she’s come this season,” said Brooks.

Riley Harvey and Lexie Portillo each had two goals against Whittell.

Yasmin and Nayeli Acosta, Kimi Trowbridge and Franco each scored one.

“This is the first year of Whittell’s program and they’re down to 10 players so we admire their resolve to keep their season going,” Brooks said.

Pershing County traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday to challenge the Spartans. Results were not available at press time.

The Mustangs host Quincy, Calif., this Friday at 4 p.m.
