Longhorn cross country team busy with two meets in Reno and Sparks

The Battle Mountain High School cross country team found its way to the Reno/Sparks area twice last week.

The Longhorns were in Sparks and Reed High School this past Friday for the Reed Invitational at Shadow Mountain Park.

Sonja Sherve paced Battle Mountain in the varsity girls 3.1-mile race with a time of 26 minutes, 12 seconds. 

Fellow junior Danielle Madalena was 62nd at 26:45 and Ivy Peterson (31:35) was 78th.

Aislin McMahon from Sky Pointe won the race at 20:31 and Galena’s Gioia Coudriet (20:47) and Lucy Nord of Douglas (20:49) were second and third, respectively.

In the boys 3.1-mile race, Sean Doney placed 117th in a time of 25:28 and Gabriel Aleman (35:30) was 130th.

Somerset Academy Sky Pointe had four of the top-10 finishers to win the team title with 34 points. 

The Sky Pointe dup of Carter Prater (17:08) and Jack Medina (17:20) were first and second.

In the girls junior varsity race, sophomore Violet Peterson finished 27th in a time of 29:47.


BMHS runs at the Ranch Invitational

Battle Mountain was in Reno on Tuesday, Oct. 1, for the Ranch Invitational at Damonte Ranch High School. The meet was scheduled for mid-September but was postponed due to the Davis Fire.

Aleman finished 25th in the boys 5,000-meter race at 32:39.

Sherve paced Battle Mountain the girls race with a time of 26:52 to place 18th. Peterson (30:34) and Madalena (31:58) finished 24th and 25th overall.

The regular season is quickly coming to an end and Battle Mountain will be in Wells on Friday. 

The regular season finale is set for Winnemucca on Friday, Oct. 18.

The Northern 1A/2A Regional Championship is Friday, Oct. 25, at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.
