Battle Mountain split matches with Oasis Academy, Yerington

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team remained in the hunt for a playoff berth in the Northern 2A with a split of two matches against Oasis Academy and Yerington this past weekend.

Oasis Academy grabbed the first set on Friday in Fallon 25-20, when Battle Mountain rallied for three straight wins at 25-19, 35-9 and 26-24.

Battle Mountain concluded the road on Saturday in Yerington, with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 loss to the Lions.

“The girls played well for a low number this weekend,” said BMHS coach Julia Ramirez. “We have been working on keeping energy when we get down by four or five points and there was a lot of success in that this weekend.

The girls were getting touches on some hard-hit balls, and the girls did well with celebrating on the court.”

The Lady Longhorns sit in sixth in the Northern 2A at 5-8, which is the final transfer spot. Pershing County, Yerington, North Tahoe, Incline and Coral Academy hold the top five spots.

In the win over Oasis Academy, Eimile Johnson paced Battle Mountain with five kills and five aces. Thalia Gonzalez added four kills and Halle Edgar and Addison Matheus each had three kills.

The Lady Longhorns finished the night with 16 aces, including four each from Asier Iturriaga and Matheus and two by Lindsey Bleak.

Matheus was dominant at the net with five solo blocks, with Edgar adding two and Noel Hill one. Hill and Alissa Hienz had six assists apiece and Bleak came away with 27 of Battle Mountain’s 60 digs. Iturriaga and Heinz each finished with eight digs.

Against Yerington, Johnson had a team-high five kills, with Gonzalez and Bleak adding four and three kills, respectively.

Edgar and Matheus each had three blocks and Bleak 15 digs.  Hienz and Hill contributed nine and eight digs.

Battle Mountain hits the road this weekend to Silver Stage on Friday and Carson City and Sierra Lutheran High School on Saturday.
