Thomas wins at Truckee Cross Country Invitational


The Lowry High School cross country team made a trip to the Sierra Nevada Mountains this past Saturday for the Truckee Cross Country Invitational.

The Buckaroos ran in the junior varsity portion of the 3.1-mile race, with sophomore Alyla Thomas winning the girls JV race in a time of 21 minutes, 46 seconds.

There were 101 racers from throughout Nevada and California in the race and Thomas was the only runner to crack the 22-minute mark. 

Galena had the next four individual finishers to win the team title with 26 points.

The Buckaroos finished second as a team with 48 points, followed by Reno (94), Pleasant Grove (131) and Laguna Creek (144).

Lowry saw three runners place in the top 10, with fellow sophomore Natalia Cassinelli sixth at 24:29 and senior Mia Preciado was eighth at 24:38.

Brooklyn Swensen placed 16th in a time of 24:59, followed by Mariah Ramos (25:30) in 24th, Azure Sagers (26:12) in 30th and Adel Hall was 63rd in a time of 28:53.

Roseville’s Melissa Peterson took home the varsity crown in a time of 19:45 and Carson, the two-time defending 5A state champion won the team title with 33 points. 

In the boys junior varsity race at Ponderosa Golf Course, sophomore Cooper Hoagland finished in the runner-up position in a time of 18:30. Galena’s Nicholas Bratcher won the race with a time of 18:23.

Freshman Anden Thomas placed 13th at 19:56 and Kolby Hoagland (20:35) was 25th.

Finn Baldwin (21:54) and Lennox Zebroski (22:23) rounded out the finishers for the Buckaroos. 

Pleasant Grove had five of the top 15 finishers to win the team title with 40 points. 

Galena placed second with 55 points and Truckee (76) and Carson (112) were third and fourth respectively. Lowry was fifth out of 11 teams with 131 points.

Truckee junior Kiefer Wilcox won the varsity boys race in a time of 15:57, which included 153 runners. Carson was the team champion with 55 points.

Lowry traveled to Reno on Tuesday for the Ranch Invitational at Damonte Ranch High School. 

The meet was made up after being canceled due to the Davis Fire. Results were not available at press time.

Lowry is in Sparks on Saturday for the Reed Invitational.
