Late rally falls short as Incline beats Battle Mountain

Battle Mountain hosted Incline on Friday for its homecoming game.

Battle Mountain hosted Incline on Friday for its homecoming game.

The last time the Incline High School football team traveled to Battle Mountain, it was for the opening round of the NIAA 2A State Championships.

The Highlanders pulled off a shocking win on that night, scoring on a long touchdown pass in the final seconds to beat the Longhorns 21-16.

The two squads saw each other once again this past Friday, as part of Battle Mountain’s homecoming.

Incline put a damper on the night, jumping out to a 28-7 lead and holding for a 28-20 win. The Longhorns dropped to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Northern 2A.

The Highlanders grabbed an 7-0 advantage in the first quarter off a 3-yard pass.

A 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter pushed the lead to 13-0, when Battle Mountain closed the gap to 13-7 at the halftime break after a touchdown pass by Jake Perrone.

Incline increased the lead to 21 points in the third quarter behind two more touchdown passes from Tommy Williams.

Battle Mountain did its best to give Incline a scare, as Perrone through his second touchdown pass of the night early in the fourth quarter to make the score 28-13 after the missed extra point.

The Longhorns closed the gap to one score at 28-20 later in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback.

With four games left in the regular season, Battle Mountain is tied with Yerington for third place in the Northern 2A.

Pershing County leads the league at 3-0 and has outscored Northern 2A opponents 162-0. Incline is second at 2-0. Pershing County and Incline were scheduled to play earlier in the year but the contest was canceled during the Davis Fire in early September.

Battle Mountain is off this week and travels to Yerington on Friday, Oct. 11, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
