The Pershing County High School girls soccer team had an eventful homecoming week.

They lost 12-0 to Lowry, tied with White Pine 0-0 and beat West Wendover 9-0.

As if that wasn't enough, their captain was crowned homecoming queen at the Friday night football game.

Lowry ended its six-match road trip in Lovelock last Tuesday.

The Lady Bucks bounced back from a 6-0 loss to undefeated Churchill County by beating the Mustangs in the first of their three homecoming week games.

Pershing County's Anika Happy, Lily Burt (goalie) and Megan DeLaVega defend their goal.

"We started off strong, but after a few goals, I could see our spirits drop," coach Kelly Brooks said. "Luckily, we moved quickly past that game and focused on Friday's game against White Pine."

The Ely and Pershing County girls came to play in the lingering summer heat. Pershing County's defense consisted of Anika Happy, Kimi Trowbridge, Megan DeLaVega and Desaray Vidrio. The coach gave them credit for playing "smart and tough soccer."

The midfielders also rallied. Yasmin and Nayeli Acosta, Riley Harvey, Lexie Portillo and Valerie Franco kept Pershing County in the fight by attacking the goal on offense.

They also pushed hard on defense. Meanwhile, goalie Lily Burt made several of her signature breathtaking saves.

White Pine fought equally hard, making the game one of the most exciting of the year so far.

To top it all off, a few hours later, the team saw their captain, senior Yasmin Acosta, crowned homecoming queen.

"Yasmin is one of the hardest working kids in the school. She strives for excellence both in sports and academically. She is the epitome of what a homecoming queen should be," Brooks said.

The girls finished homecoming week on Saturday with a decisive win and nine goals against the West Wendover Wolverines. Lexie Portillo scored three goals, a hat trick.

Nayeli Acosta scored two. Yasmin Acosta, Riley Harvey, Grace Kalsem and Alejandra Pineda each added one.

Pershing County sits at 5-6-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the 3A.

Last week, Pershing County hosted Fallon (Oct. 1) and Whittell (Oct. 3). Results were not available at press time.

Some dates are still being worked out, but future games include Quincy, Spring Creek (Oct. 8), Fernley (Oct. 15), Battle Mountain (Oct. 17), Yerington (Oct. 19) and Dayton (Oct. 22).

Battle Mountain and Yerington will be home games, with Yerington being the last home game of the year — senior night.
