Last Friday, the Pershing County High School football team provided its third straight shutout over a Northern 2A opponent. The Mustangs beat the visiting Yerington Lions 54-0 on homecoming night at PCHS.

The festivities included halftime fireworks and the crowning of a new homecoming king and queen — Izayuh McGlothin and Yasmin Acosta.

This year, all of the candidates for king were football players — McGlothin, Tyrn Sam, Denzel Zaldivar and Kaden Chambers. Despite the festive atmosphere, the Mustangs focused on their game.

Tyrn Sam (32) heads for the end zone.

“Sometimes you worry about distractions during homecoming festivities, but credit to the kids, they came out and executed. The offensive line paved the way, as usual, led by Efrain Aceves,” coach Mike Brooks said.

Sam had over 100 yards rushing on only eight attempts and added two touchdowns. McGlothin, Luis Sanchez, Zaldivar and Travis Donaldson also scored for the Mustangs. Zaldivar added two special teams touchdowns.

“Defensively, Michael Reitz intercepted two passes. Trenton Rhodes made some nice plays at linebacker, including tackles for loss,” Brooks added.

With the win, Pershing County stands at the top of the Northern 2A at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in their league.

On Oct. 11 the Mustangs travel to Dayton to play the Dust Devils in a non-conference game. They’ll be back on Joe Yanni Field on Oct. 18 to host West Wendover for a league matchup.

Brooks thanks the town for supporting homecoming week.

“It truly is a special celebration in Pershing County. It wouldn’t be that way without the community support and parents that make it all happen,” he said.
