CARSON CITY — As colder weather approaches, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is reminding residents that firewood cutting permits are required for gathering firewood on public lands in the Carson City District.
Permits are now available online and at several local locations for individuals wishing to collect firewood for personal use.
Firewood cutting permits are available for purchase through the BLM's online portal at https://forestproducts.blm.gov/. Permits can also be obtained in person at various locations in the region, including the BLM Carson City District Office, the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the UNR Cooperative Extension Office in Fallon.
Permits are required for the collection of standing dead or downed juniper and pinyon pine within the Carson City District. In addition, permits are available for cutting Jeffrey pine within Alpine County, California, specifically in areas impacted by the 2021 Tamarack Fire. The BLM emphasizes that no green trees of any species may be cut, and the materials gathered are for personal use only — reselling firewood is prohibited.
Personal use firewood permits are priced at $10 per cord, with a limit of 10 cords per person per year. The permits are valid for 90 days from the date of purchase.
“Firewood cutting is a popular activity for many during the colder months, but it's important to make sure that you have the proper permit and are following all safety protocols,” said Brian McMillan, Special Forest Products Manager for the BLM Carson City District.
To ensure safe and responsible cutting, the BLM encourages firewood gatherers to carry their permit, load tags, and a map of the area. The BLM advises taking precautions to prevent wildfires by having a fire extinguisher, shovel, and bucket of water on hand while cutting wood. Additionally, all chainsaws must be equipped with a spark arrestor.
Gatherers should also stay on designated roads and carefully check maps to confirm they are on BLM-managed lands.
Any violations or suspicious activity should be reported to the Carson City District Office, with detailed information such as location, license plate numbers, and directions to the site.
