With just six players, the McDermitt High School volleyball team made its way to Elko this past Saturday for an opportunity to advance to state at the Northern 1A East Regional Championships.
The Lady Bulldogs entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and took on Lund in the quarterfinals. The two teams traded victories this fall in league play.
McDermitt rallied from two set points and won the opener 26-24 but Lund came back to claim the victory 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 in the final three sets.
The Mustangs quickly scored the first four points of the opening set, with the run finally stopped by a Vina Tom kill.

She is the only senior on the squad. Trailing 14-8, McDermitt closed the gap to four points after a kill by Tom and an ace by Cree Crutcher.
The Lady Bulldogs faced another six-point deficit at 17-11 but came back to tie it at 17 after a tip hit the line. Down three points at 24-21, Reign Crutcher scored on two straight tips and an ace tie the set at 24. A tip by Kiarra Crutcher gave McDermitt its first lead at 25-24 and Cree Crutcher ended the set with an ace.
The Lady Bulldogs held the advantage for the first part of the second set, when the Mustangs tied at 9-9 and then pulled away for a 17-11 lead.
McDermitt climbed within three points at 19-16 off a tip by Reign Critcher but missed a serve on the next point, allowing Lund to get the set win.

The Lady Bulldogs used three aces a kill from Tom and a kill from Kiarra Crutcher to lead 16-7. McDermitt looked in control of the third set after a kill by Cree Crutcher made the score 18-11 but Lund did not go away and reeled off seven straight points to tie it at 18. The Mustangs went on a 4-1 run from there and took a 2-1 advantage.
McDermitt needed to win the fourth set to keep the match alive and started off hot, leading 7-3 and 14-9 at one point. Lund came back to tie the set at 15 and 18 and scored the next three points to go in front 21-18 and claim the match win.
McDermitt finished the year at 7-7 overall.
