Lowry’s Thomas collects top-five finish at NIAA 3A State Championships; Buckaroos place fourth as a team

The Lowry High School girls cross country team finished fourth at the NIAA 3A State Championships held this past Saturday at Veterans Park in Boulder City,

The most successful season in more than a decade for the Lowry High School girls cross country team ended this past Saturday with a fourth-place finish at the NIAA 3A State Championships at Veterans Park in Boulder City.

The Buckaroos qualified for the state meet for the first time since winning the state championship in 2009.

Lowry sophomore Alyla Thomas concluded her spectacular year with a fifth-place finish in a time of 21 minutes, 2.60 seconds. 

Truckee senior Sidney McIntosh won the race with a time of 19:45.90.

South Tahoe’s Lyla Landy was the runner-up at 20:09, followed by Elko freshman Avery Shotly (20:33.50) and teammate Liliana Hayes (20:41.00).

Buckaroo freshman Azure Sagers ran her second-quickest 5,000-meter race of the season and placed 27th in a time of 23:56.70. 

Lowry had four runners hit the finish line in order. Mia Preciado, a senior, placed 31st at 24:09.60, followed by Mariah Ramos (24:18.0), Brooklyn Swensen (24:18.60) and Natalia Cassinelli (24:38.40). 

Adel Hall finished 55th with a time of 28:26.60.

Preciado and Swensen are the only seniors on the squad.

Truckee took home the state title back to the California Sierra Mountain with 37 points.

Elko (57) and Spring Creek (60) were second and third, respectively.

The four Southern 3A school rounded out the team standings, with Pahrump Valley fifth with 125 points.

The Trojans were followed by Somerset Academy Losee (151), Virgin Valley (204) and Moapa Valley (212).  


Hoagland runs for Lowry boys

Lowry sophomore Cooper Hoagland was the only runner that qualified for the state meet for the Buckaroos. 

The young runner placed 17th with a time of 18:14.70.

Truckee junior Kiefer Wilcox was clear of the field by 15 seconds to win the individual title at 15:58.10. 

Wooster’s Atticus Reyher (16:13.80) and Moapa Valley’s Mordrchai Yedegar (16:25.40) were second and third. 

Wooster’s Carson Boyer (167:43.60) and South Tahoe’s Jacob Manning (16:54.50) rounded out the top five.

Truckee made it a sweep of the team titles, winning with 46 points. 

Spring Creek (63), Wooster (89), Moapa Valley (90) and South Tahoe (115) closed out the top five.

Southern 3A schools rounded out the team standings, Virgin Valley (150), Pahrump Valley (163) and Coral Academy (215).
