The Battle Mountain High School football team was in a must-win situation as it traveled to the Utah/Nevada border to face West Wendover on Friday.
A Longhorn loss would mean staying home for the postseason, while a win kept the season alive.
After an up and down fall, Battle Mountain picked up the much-needed victory, winning 36-15.
The Longhorns will be the No. 3 seed at 4-3.
West Wendover took the opening drive down the field and scored four minutes into the contest to lead 7-0.
However, there would not be that much offense from the Wolverines from that point.
Battle Mountain turned the ball over deep in its own territory but West Wendover could not capitalize, missing a 37-yard field goal.
The Longhorns countered quickly when they got the ball back, as Daniel Lara scored on a 60-yard run with 3:29 left in the first quarter.
The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the Wolverines with a 7-6 advantage.
Early in the second quarter Wyatt Madalena gave Battle Mountain its first lead at 14-7 after a 6-yard run with nine minutes left in the second quarter.
Battle Mountain added to its lead with 1:52 left in the third quarter on 4th-and-goal from the 2.
It went from bad to worse for the Wolverines, who fumbled after making a catch and Chase Lutz was their to collect the loose ball and score on a 50-yard return for a touchdown and a 28-7 advantage with 44.6 seconds left in the third quarter.
West Wendover cut the deficit to 28-15 a minute into the fourth quarter aided by a long kickoff return. Lara added the final blow with a short touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.
Battle Mountain opens the NIAA 2A State quarterfinals on Friday at Incline. A game time has not been set as of press time.
