Fatal crash on Interstate 80 near Battle Mountain


On Saturday, May 18, at approximately 1:25 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) Troopers responded to a crash on Interstate 80 near mile marker 226 in Lander County.

This location is three miles west of Battle Mountain.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2023 Peterbilt tractor/trailer (commercial motor vehicle) was stopped on the outside paved shoulder of westbound Interstate 80 near mile marker 226. 

A white Cadillac XT5 sport utility vehicle (SUV) was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 in the rightmost travel lane. 

The driver of the Cadillac allowed the vehicle to travel over the white  painted fog line and onto the paved shoulder when the right front of the Cadillac struck the left rear of the commercial motor vehicle. 

Unfortunately, the passenger of the Cadillac succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

The identity of the passenger is being withheld pending next of kin notification. The driver of the Cadillac was transported from the scene and remains in critical condition. 

The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East MultiDisciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.).
