A total of 432 students earned their degrees this year as a part of the entire Great Basin College (GBC) graduating class of 2024; 74 of those students earned their degrees at the local GBC campus and walked in the ceremony on May 18 with multiple students earning their degrees while also attending high school concurrently.

It is no easy feat to earn a degree or invest in education with many students taking classes while also working, having families, and many other circumstances, but thanks to their hard work, GBC’s flexible schedules and programs and dedicated staff, these students are going on to accomplish great things.

“It is an incredible achievement for every student to graduate high school or college with an Associate of Arts degree, but to do both at the same time requires a tremendous amount of dedication, grit, and hard work. Only thirteen students GBC-wide are dual graduates this year, and we’re honored six are from our local center,” said GBC Winnemucca Center Director Becky Coleman.

According to GBC Director of Communications Sarah Massie, the total graduates across all GBC campuses is consistent with last year’s numbers, but at the Winnemucca Center, according to Coleman, more graduates walked from Winnemucca this year than last year.

Additionally, two students from Lowry High School (LHS)— Isabella Bartell and Jeremy Moore— graduated with Associate of Arts degrees as well as their high school diplomas and four students from Battle Mountain High School are also dual graduates.

From an Associates of Arts degree to certifications in Instrumentation Technology, students will be taking a range of skills out into the workforce, continuing their education, and many more opportunities open to them.

Winnemucca Police Department Chief Mike Rangel gave the commencement speech and Regent Heather Brown and GBC President Joyce Helens also spoke.
