Lowry golfers wrap up regular season with pair of tournaments


The Lowry High School boys golf team concluded its regular season last week with tournaments in Dayton and Reno.

The Buckaroos and the Northern 3A saw its tournament move from South Lake Tahoe to the Arnold Palmer-designed Dayton Valley Country Club on Monday, May 6.

As it has been all year, the team standings were tight, with Churchill County and Elko tying for the top spot with scores of 332. 

South Tahoe finished third at 344 and Fernley (346) and Spring Creek (358) rounded out the five.

Truckee (363), North Valleys (370), Lowry (376), Dayton (383) and Hug (424) completed the top five.

Fernley’s Jacob Holmes was the low medalist with an impressive round of 73. Holmes also earned Northern 3A MVP honors for the season. He was followed by Elko’s Boden Goicoeachea (78) and Churchill County’s Pakela Malama-Gomes (79).

Landon Esquivel paced the Buckaroos with a round of 89, followed by teammates Jack DeLong (90) and Maddex Hislop (93). John Boyle had the last kept score at 104 and Landon Tangreen (110) and Jack Olson (113) rounded out the Lowry scores.


Lowry finishes fifth in Reno

The regular season finale took place at Sierra Sage Golf Course in Reno on Tuesday, May 7. 

The top eight teams were separated by 29 strokes. Churchill County clinched the Northern 3A title, winning the tournament at 333. Elko finished one shot back at 334 and Fernley (343) and Truckee (343) placed third and fourth, respectfully.

The Buckaroos finished fifth with a score of 351, followed by South Tahoe (362), North Valleys (361), Spring Creek (362), Dayton (370) and Hug (406).

Holmes went low on the day for the second tournament in a row, shooting 75 and Goicoeachea was second at 77. 

The Buckaroos’ Esquivel and Churchill County’s Colin Shishido tied for third with scores of 79.

Hislop carded an 84 for Lowry and DeLong (92), Boyle (96) and Olson (97) all broke 100. Tangreen finished with a 105.

Esquivel and Hislop qualified for the state championships as individuals. Esquivel was named to the Northern 3A first team and Hislop notched a second-team selection. 

Joining Churchill County at the state championships in Pahrump are Fernley and Truckee. 

The Northern 3A does not hold at Northern 3A postseason tournament and the three spots are based on the final regular season standings.
