Tobey wins discus, places second at Northern 1A Trials

You never know what you are going to get weather wise in northern Nevada in early May and Mother Nature provided her punch this past Saturday the Northern 1A Regional Track and Field Trials at Reed High School in Sparks.

Cold, wet and windy weather was on the menu for the day.

Despite the nasty conditions, the McDermitt High School track and field team provided a number of good finishes.

Laeloni Tobey set a personal best in the discus with a throw of 92 feet, 5 inches to win the event by 3.5 inches. Sophomore teammates Cierra Smart (82-7) and Kiarra Crutcher (71-10) advances to the regional championships in the event with fourth and eighth-place finishes respectfully.

Tobey notched a runner-up finish in the shot pit with a toss of 28-9, as Carlin’s Kylie Kennedy won at 31-1.

Crutcher placed fourth with a toss of 27-1.50 and Smart was sixth (26-4).

The McDermitt boys were led by a second-place finish from sophomore Shandon Camas in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 41-7. Mineral County’s Ivan Eaton won with a mark of 45-9.

AJ Farmer placed seventh in the shot put to earn his position in the regional championships. He had a throw of 32-5.

Camas turned in a second runner-up finish in the discus (114-2), with the Serpents’ Eaton winning at 119-6. Farmer set a personal best in the discus with a throw of 96-10 to finish sixth.

Freshman Chris Scott ran a personal best 62.81 in the 400 meters to place 11th.

Warrick Crutcher placed 15th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:52.36 and  Caden Crutcher set a personal best in the 800 meters, finishing 19th (3:06.82).

The Northern Regional Championships start at 2 p.m., at Carson High School in Carson City. The second day begins at 9 a.m.

The top three placers in each event from the Northern Region and the top three placers in each event from the Southern Region meet automatically advance to the state meet.

The remaining two state qualifiers will be determined by comparing the region meet final results and advancing the next best two marks per event, regardless of region affiliation and/or wind-aided marks.
