Last week the Pershing County High School softball team defeated Silver Stage on the road in five innings (36-19).
This past Saturday, the Mustangs hosted and beat the Nighthawks in both senior day games (15-0, 19-4).
With the series sweep, Pershing County sits at the top of the Northern 2A League at 23-0 overall and 21-0 in league play.
The Pershing County Mustangs celebrate as a team.
“The girls put in a ton of work and it all came to fruition when we ended the regular season undefeated,” coach Jordan McKinney said. “Watching the seniors come off the field was a bittersweet moment. They’ve each been part of the program for four years. They’ve improved as softball players but, more importantly, have grown into beautiful and strong young women.”
Taylor Garland, Anna Happy, Kaylah Hanley, Mady Grenz, Miya Gallagher and Yasmine McKinney played the last home game of their high school careers. Now they head into the postseason.
In Silver Springs, McKinney went 3-for-6 with four runs, five RBI and a double.
Meanwhile, sophomore Anika Happy scored five runs and got on base in six of her seven plate appearances.
Pershing County senior Miya Gallagher signals to her teammates from first base, along with coach Jason Allen.
In Saturday’s opener, Gallagher, Anna Happy, McKinney and Garland each scored two runs and stole a base for the Mustangs.
Raegan Burrows, a junior, went 1-for-2 with two runs, a triple and two RBI. Grenz and Riley Harvey also scored two runs. Kaylah Hanley added one with one RBI.
The Mustangs are fun to watch and a big crowd showed up for the senior day games. At one point, Gallagher signaled to her teammates from first base.
“I had a good slap that was a line drive to shortstop. My team shouted, ‘Show me some love’ and I gave them the biggest heart,” she said.
In the closer, Anna Happy went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs and a triple. Anika Happy scored a run while going 2-for-2. Gallagher recorded the win.
“I am confident these girls can accomplish anything they put their minds to and we are ready to take on zone this weekend,” McKinney said. “They are hungry, especially the seniors.”
