BMHS softball nears playoff berth


The Battle Mountain High School softball team inched closer to a spot in the Northern 2A Regional Championship, May 10-11, in Lovelock.

Battle Mountain knocked off Yerington 16-5 on Friday afternoon in Yerington, with the Lions bouncing back to sweep Saturday’s doubleheader 11-9 and 6-5. 

The Lady Longhorns stand at 9-9 in league play.


BMHS 16, Yerington 5

Battle Mountain took control with a 9-2 lead in the third inning and tacked on seven runs in the fifth for good measure.

The Lady Longhorns belted 11 hits, including three each from Adison Matheus and Stevlana Martinez.  Matheus added five RBI and Martinez three of her own. 

Aspen Swanger earned the complete-game win, allowing five runs on six hits, with seven strikeouts.


Yerington 11, BMHS 9

Battle Mountain looked poised to grab the opening game on Saturday morning, leading 7-3 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Lions cut the deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game in the fifth with a single run.

A double by Halle Edgar gave Battle Mountain an 8-7 lead in the sixth inning and Edgar later scored on an error to provide a two-run cushion.

Yerington took advantage of two errors and added two doubles to score four times in the sixth and win the game.

Jazmin Johnson, Heidy Amezcua and Matheus each had two hits.


Yerington 6, BMHS 5

Battle Mountain scored the first three runs of the nightcap, but Yerington scored single runs in six of the seven innings, including the final five. The Lions tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning and walked off with a double in the seventh.

Battle Mountain travels to North Tahoe this weekend to conclude regular season play.

Pershing County will be the No. 1 seed in the regional tournament and is undefeated on the season.

Yerington will be the No. 2 seed and Oasis Academy will be the third seed in its first year in the Northern 2A. 

Battle Mountain needs one win over North Tahoe to clinc the fourth seed.
