Pershing County’s Chelsea Woodard, Kenya Vaughan, and Hayley and Khloe Montes celebrate their relay win at the Dust Devil Invite.

Last year, the Pershing County track and field team finished with only six athletes. This year's roster lists 16 boys and 12 girls. On Friday they excelled at the Dayton Dust Devil Invite.

"There were PRs all over the place. We're very proud," said Chelsea Montes. She and Ben Halverson coach the team.

Brian Kauvaka, a senior, and Tyrn Sam, a junior, made their throwing debuts. Kauvaka threw over 31 (31-9.25) feet in the shot put. Sam hurled the discus over 90 feet (91-9).

"The boys relays swept with first-place finishes in every single relay," Montes added.

Ashton Jimenez, Aaron Zelaya, Jorden Fitch and Angelo Gibson ran on the 4x800 team. They dropped a remarkable 28 seconds off their most recent time (the March 9 Fernley League Meet).

The 4x400 team ran 12 seconds faster than they did in Fernley.

Every PCHS girl who competed in the long jump hit a new PR.

Freshman Chelsea Woodard leaped over 13 feet (13-1). Sophomores Emma Blondheim and Elizabeth Pearce each jumped over 12 feet.

Likewise, every PCHS girl who threw the discus hit a new PR. They included Sugeily Valtierra (53-0.5), Ariana Garcia (46-8) and Magdalena Ramirez (39-11). Valtierra and Ramirez also competed in the shot put.

Woodard, Vaughan, and Haylee and Khloe Montes won the 4x200 relay.

On Saturday, the team travels to the 49th annual Fallon Elks Invitational. It takes place at Churchill County High School.
