The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its final stop in southern Nevada, with a trip to Las Vegas on Feb. 24-25.
Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo was tops in the breakaway roping average by two seconds at 5.88.
She won the first performance with a time of 2.89 and was second in the final performance at 2.99.
She placed fifth in the barrel racing average with a time of 34.754, producing strong times of 17.373 and 17.381.
Garijo finished 10th in pole bending after knocking down a pole in the first performance for a time of 27.185.
She bounced back to place fourth in the second performance with a time of 21,126.
Humboldt County’s Matti DeLong notched the top spot in girls cutting with 139 points.
She finished third in the first performance with 71 points and was second in the finale at 68.
DeLong won the second performance of goat tying, stopping the clock at 8.66, the quickest time of the weekend. She was third in the average at 18.800.
She won the opening performance of barrel racing with a time of 17.002 but knocked over a barrel in her second run to place seventh in the average.
DeLong was 12th in pole bending, which included a fourth-place finish in the first performance. She did not have a time in the second performance.
Humboldt County’s Leigh Johnson was the runner-up in the pole bending average, with two third-place finishes of 21.451 and 21.113.
Battle Mountain’s Italy Jo Holman swept both performances of pole bending to win the average at 21.978.
She was the only cowgirl to break 21 seconds in the event.
Holman finished eighth in the barrel racing after knocking one down in her first run. She came back for a runner-up finish in the second performance in a time of 17.058.
Battle Mountain’s Amelia Lancaster placed eighth in the breakaway roping average on the strength of a third-place run in the first performance at 3.87. She missed her calf in the second performance.
Jorja Mashburn was 17th in the breakaway average but was 10th in her second run at 8.73.
Lancaster placed sixth in goat tying and Mashburn was 12th, and Lancaster finished ninth in pole bending.
On the boys side, Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong, who just signed a letter of intent to New Mexico State, won the average in saddle bronc and tie-down roping.
He was the only cowboy to have a successful ride in saddle bronc, scoring 61 points in the first performance.
DeLong led the way in the second performance of tie-down roping at 10.190 to win the average at 23.780.
He placed second in steer wrestling after receiving a no time in the first performance. He won the second run with a time of 10.590. DeLong was sixth in boys cutting.
Lane Byrd posted a third-place finish in boys cutting and was second in team roping with Wells’ Tucker Shippy as his healing partner. Byrd finished 10th in tie-down roping.
Battle Mountain’s Flint Schacht placed fourth in bull riding.
Junior High Results
At the junior high level, Humboldt County’s Louise DeLong came back with the barrel racing crown and Huntley Byrd was seventh in the event. She won the first performance with a time of 17.022 but had no time in the second performance.
Taylor Hill and Byrd were second and third, respectfully, in breakaway roping. Byrd won the second performance at 3.45 seconds and was the only cowgirl under four seconds. DeLong was fifth in the average on the strength of a second-place finish in the first performance.
DeLong placed fifth in goat tying, while teammates Byrd and Taylor were seventh and eighth. DeLong and partner Henry Buchanan of Eureka won the ribbon roping average by 11 seconds.
Huntley Byrd and Frank Buchanan from Fernley were fourth in ribbon roping.
Humboldt County’s Bryce Fears led the way in boys breakaway roping and he was seventh in goat tying.
Humboldt County’s Ben Marvel won the chute dogging average, with Battle Mountain’s Logan Lancaster fourth. Fears placed ninth in the event.
The next stop for the cowboys and cowgirls is this weekend in Fernley.
