On February 20, 2024 at approximately 4:15p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Nampa Police Department regarding Anthony Erasmo Madrid Jr., 25 years of age, from Nampa, Idaho who had fled from Idaho Law Enforcement Agencies after being involved in four separate shooting incidents in Caldwell and Nampa, including shooting at a Nampa Police Officer who attempted to apprehend him.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch was advised Madrid was a known gang member with ties to the Reno, Nevada area and was currently wanted on multiple felony warrants for charges including Aggravated Assault, Prohibited Person Possession Firearm, Resisting an Officer with the Use of a Firearm, Parole Violations, and other charges with a bail of $5,000,000.00. The Nampa Police Department, who were using cell phone data to track Madrid, informed the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling south on US 95 from Idaho to Nevada, and he had called and made numerous suicidal and “suicide by cop” statements over the phone to their agency.
At approximately 6:00p.m., Madrid was located traveling south on US 95 at approximately Mile Marker 53 in Humboldt County. Spike Strips were deployed on his vehicle which punctured the driver’s side tires. Madrid continued to flee from deputies for approximately three miles before his vehicle exited the west side of the highway. When his vehicle stopped, Madrid, who was the sole occupant, did not exit the vehicle, and no response to commands was received from inside of the vehicle. When deputies approached the vehicle, Madrid was in the driver seat holding a 9mm Handgun with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. It was also discovered a round had been discharged through the windshield of the vehicle.
Madrid was provided medical treatment for the gunshot wound by Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Services and transported via Air Ambulance to Renown Trauma Center in Reno. Madrid succumbed to the gunshot wound at around 1:00a.m. The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting the coroner investigation and autopsy related to his death.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Nevada State Police Investigation and Highway Patrol Divisions, Nampa Police Department, Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Bureau of Indian Affairs Law Enforcement for their assistance during this incident and the investigation that followed.
